Dinard or Dinan?

In northern Brittany, between the departments of Ille-et-Vilaine and Côtes d’Armor, two towns have similar names that sometimes confuse our visitors: Dinard and Dinan.

Although they are separated by only about twenty kilometers, these two towns are very different. To help avoid any mistakes and ensure you don’t get lost, we’ve prepared a little summary!

Why such similar names?

The prefix “Din” comes from Breton and means “fortified hill.”
Each of these two towns overlooks its surroundings: Dinard, with its stunning Pointe de la Malouine and Pointe du Moulinet rising beside the emerald waters of the English Channel, and Dinan, perched on its hill, dominating the Rance valley.

Where are we?

To know which town you are in, here are a few clues that might help you…

By the sea? You’re in Dinard!
In the heart of the magnificent Côte d’Émeraude, Dinard proudly faces the corsair city of Saint-Malo. You’ll find all the advantages of a seaside town here: the beach, fresh sea air, water activities, and boat trips…

At the foot of the ramparts? You’re in Dinan!
A thousand-year-old town, the historic center of Dinan is surrounded by ramparts and topped by a lovely medieval castle. While in Dinard, it’s the Belle Époque villas that will take your breath away!

By the Rance? Both!
Dinard and Dinan are both located along the banks of the Rance. This river flows peacefully alongside the ramparts of Dinan, emptying into the English Channel, between Dinard and Saint-Malo.

Choosing between Dinard and Dinan

Still not sure where your next vacation destination will be?
Let us help you choose!

If you want to breathe in the fresh sea air, stroll along a breathtaking GR34 hiking trail, discover the rugged landscapes of the Côte d’Émeraude, and enjoy the beach with your family, we recommend Dinard.
Renowned for its grand seaside villas and art galleries, it’s a great place for a salty vacation.

On the other hand, if you prefer to wander through the streets of a medieval town, then you shouldn’t miss Dinan. A 13th-century castle, a historic center surrounded by ramparts, and a charming river port await you.

I’m on vacation in Dinard, how do I get to Dinan?

It’s very simple! A day trip is more than enough to discover the historical heritage of Dinan, including its ramparts that surround the half-timbered houses, its steep cobbled streets, and its artisan shops. Don’t miss the chance to stroll down to the port, where you can wander, eat, or enjoy a drink.

Finally, for the more athletic, you can hop on your bike and head towards the greenway that safely connects the two towns.

Prepare your visit to Dinan.
