A long maritime tradition
In the 19th century, the residents of Minihic were sailors, shipwrights, or caulkers, and around forty shipyards were present in the municipality. Today, only three remain, including La Landriais, which is listed in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments. Previously, the shipyards worked on fishing and trading vessels. Although this activity has ceased, the shipyards are still very active: they have been restored and converted for pleasure boats.
Facing the La Landriais slipway, you will see an islet in the middle of the Rance. Until the Revolution, it was home to a monastery where monks guided sailors navigating up the estuary. The municipality of Minihic-sur-Rance derives its name from this history. In Breton, “Minihic” means “House of the Monks.”
As you stroll through the village, you will walk past the houses with porches belonging to sailors and shipwrights, as well as the homes of captains.
